Running W is operating an integrated farming system. All of the waste, including bones, from the meat plant is burned and converted to be used as fertilizer mainly for our citrus grove. All of the water waste is sent through our waste water treatment system. This system, with a chain connection of 3 ponds, naturally reduces the nitrate levels and solids in the water allowing us to put cleaner water in the leech field.
For us, it is important to minimize our inputs, especially imported inputs, for example, diesel fuel. With proper pasture management we have significantly reduced the use of bush hogs in our pastures making the amount of fuel we use to produce a steer, very minimal.
Also, we are pumping water to our cattle troughs using solar power without the use of batteries. This type of management practice not only helps us with our bottom line but also improves and sustains our environment.
